Are you FIRE, WATER, EARTH or AIR? If you said earth, you are in the majority. According to the Lycra® Style System Poll, a national consumer survey commis sioned by DuPont, over half of American women (54 per cent) have earth personalities, describing themselves as "practical, dependable and down to earth." Eighteen per cent have water personalities, saying they are "perceptive, artistic and sensitive." Fire types, those describing them selves as "active, daring and passionate," make up 12 per cent, and another 12 percent fit the air personality profile, classifying themselves as "intellectual, curious and off beat." Each woman's personality influences her style and fashion choices. To help every earth, water, fire and air woman identify the styles that best match her personality, DuPont Lycra has created The Elements O f Style, a system that demystifies fashion trends and helps women develop their personal sense of style. "We created The Elements O f Style to show women how to select fashions that best fit their personality and lifestyle, in order to help them feel comfortable and confi dent and make the most of their wardrobe budget," explains Kristin Finio, marketing communications special ist, DuPont Lycra. "Fire personalities, like Fran Drescher, are daring, so they like bold, entrance-making clothes that announce their arrival and shout `I'm here!' This season, they'll love anything with faux-fur trim or metallic accents that stand out in the crowd," explains Philip Bloch, Hollywood styl ist to the stars and consultant on The Elements O f Style program. Water types, including Cameron Diaz, will feel and look best in sleek, polished clothes, like long, pleated skirts, straight-leg pants and satiny, body-hugging tops in shades of blue. Air personalities, such as U m a Thurman, can express themselves in more eclectic looks, like floorskimming coats, ankle-grazing skirts and sheer sweaters in gray, which is the new black and the hottest color for right now. While earth types, like Vanessa W illiams, are the most practical, there are tons o f great looks for them, too, like knee-length shifts, khaki and cargo-style pants and quilted jackets. "As a celebrity stylist, I have to make my clients look amazing for each appearance, yet enhance their best fea tures and let their individual personalities shine!" adds Bloch. "If you don't look good, you w on't feel good, and if you don't feel good, you w on't look good, I always say. No doubt, when the clothes I choose are made with Lycra, they are easy to move in, fit and drape fantastically and resist wrinkles so my clients feel great and look fabulous!" You may want your wedding and your wedding gown to reflect the latest themes: simple, sleek sophistication or the romanticism of Victorian and Edwardian times, or you may want a classi cal wedding reflecting your fam ily's traditions. W hichever direction you are inclined, your store-tostore search for the perfect wedding dress and accessories can be a daunting challenge. You may love the line o f one dress, the neckline of another, the lace of yet a third, but when you're a year to six months out from the most impor tant day of your life, compromise is out o f the question. An exciting alternative to an off-the-rack gown, accord ing to the Home Sewing Association, is to sew the gown yourself or to use the services of a professional seamstress. The benefits of making your own bridal gown are many, especially if you are hard to please. Customizing a dress can cost less than a store-bought gown, and you will get the exact style, fabric and details you want without compromising. Before pattern shopping, cut out photos o f silhouettes and details you love from bridal magazines. You may even want to visit a large bridal boutique to see which silhouette looks best on your body type. Then shop for patterns at your fabric store. Choose ele ments from various patterns. T here's no reason why you can't use the sleeves from one gown, the bodice or back detail from another and a skirt from yet another. To ensure proper fit and to avoid mistakes, create a muslin. The muslin is a prototype for your final gown and allows you to refine the look and combine the different pattern pieces for the perfect fit. Next select a fabric. Preference for a particular fabric may ultimately drive your style decision. Styles requiring heavier fabric such as shantung, taffetas or jacquard can still be lightened up with sheer illusion or lace in the sleeves, shoulders, train and veil to create an ethereal look. Purchase ample fabric so the dye lot is consistent and to ensure that your accessories coordinate. Accessories? Short sweep trains are the hottest look, while sewers can also opt for long cathedral veils. Multiple veils, such as the multi-layered flyaway, which brushes the shoulders, and fingertip length are anchored by tiaras and headbands. Purses can be finely detailed with silk ribbon embroidery to add another chic elem ent to your wedding ensemble. - (Home Sewing Association) BIRKENSTOCK' Beautiful Bridal Make-up professionally applied in your own home Flawless make-up for bride and attendants Pictureperfectfor video and photography "Weddingproof - will last all day Enhancesfeatures without looking overdone Certified Make-up Artist since 1989 1.800.565.0585 Visit our fully interactive Macromedia Flash Website: www.sunveil.com R n e Io c a I area S u n v e H S u n w e a r is AVAiUble at t U ese r e ta U ers : Karen's Boutkpie 2416 Marine Drive Bronte 827-0010 Chatsworth &Hal Irish Classics Truly You I Sunveil Boutique 146 Lakeshore Rd., L 88 Dunn Street 154 Queen Street, South Oakville 338-0894 Oakville 338-7160 Mississauga 821-1092 chesler SHOES Oakville Place 8 4 5 -4 7 2 4 Stephanie boswell larkin (905) 827-9999
