Rock hits peak after win over Redmen The Oakville Rock, at least for the moment, sits tied for first place in the Major Series Lacrosse League standings. The move into top spot comes after the Rock stunned league supporters with a 13-5 win over the favoured Brooklin Redmen and a pair of wins over the Brampton Excelsiors. Oakville, which was scheduled to take on the Redmen last night (Wednesday) on the road, is calling the move into first a huge stepping stone as the team has never sat higher than last season's third-place finish. After year's of struggling in Ajax-Pickering, the Rock franchise re-located to Oakville in 2013. After two summers of sub-par lacrosse, the Rock has built the team with a core of young talent and is quietly making noise as a league contender. Since Matt Sawyer took over the team one year ago, the Rock has a record of 13-6 and had its first playoff appearance last season. His approach has been for the team to take care of its own house and not be overly concerned with matchups and opponents. Monday in Oakville, the Rock rode stellar netminding from Nick Rose, who shut the door for the last 45 minutes, to earn a 7-3 win. Wesley Berg, Mitch Desnoo, Alex Crepinsek, Jeremy Noble, Bryan Cole, Rob Hellyer and Dan Lomas scored the Rock goals. Andy Wilkinson, a defender who played more than 120 Premier League matches with Stoke City before retiring this year, will be at ADP Soccer Academy for two clinics in August. "It's massive to have a Premier League player, a player who has represented his club at the highest level, in for a clinic," said ADP's owner and director Josh Bill. "A player of his calibre and the kind of knowledge he has and has been able to gather from the top coaches, to have him teach the kids, it's huge." Bill and the Mississauga/Oakville-based academy's technical director, Adam Cookson, used to work for Stoke City and made the arrangements through the English club. A defending masterclass clinic will be held weekdays Aug. 8-17 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The clinics are open to all players. The second clinic, where general soccer skills will be taught, will be held weekdays Aug. 18-26 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Both will be held at King's Christian Collegiate at Burnhamthorpe Road and Neyagawa Boulevard.
