Wallpaper provides a total transformation By Katelyn Dingman Wallpaper has made a major comeback in the design world in recent years. With advanced technology and unlimited design options, the traditional wall treatment can transform any room. Katie Hunt developed a passion for wallpaper design after wallpapering her own home seven years ago. Today, Hunt is the proud owner of Katie's Wallpaper Installation Inc., based out of Oakville, and has appeared on The Property Brothers and The Marilyn Denis Show. "Wallpaper is my passion. What else can you do in a few hours and totally transform somebody's space?" Hunt said. "It's such an emotion on the wall. You can take a really boring space and transform it into something really interesting." With nearly a decade of experience in the wallpaper design industry, Hunt is sharing some helpful tips that will help transform your own home: Be creative With a wide variety of styles and designs to choose from, the possibilities are endless. Today you can purchase wallpaper with a 3D effect, wallpaper with sparkles and wallpaper with a pearlescent finish. Hunt said this new technology is well advanced from the type of wallpaper you could purchase five years ago. So be creative and get inspired by the endless choices. "The technology has developed in such a way that they are able to do so much more with wallpaper and make it so much more interesting," Hunt said. "It's more like piece of art on the wall." The traditional floral design, Hunt said, also remains very popular in the wallpaper design world. Purchase non-woven wallpaper Hunt suggests sticking to non-woven wallpaper because it sticks. Compared to the traditional pre-pasted wallpaper, non-woven does not peel even in moist environments like the bathroom. "I always recommend getting a non-woven. It installs the best, is seamless and the quality is totally different. It's a much thicker wallpaper and it doesn't have the same issues as pre-pasted." Hunt said that the non-woven wallpaper is breathable, making it ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. The wallpaper designer is often tasked with fixing pre-pasted wallpaper, which Hunt noted can only be properly reattached with Roman Pro-880 glue, which is only available in large tubs. But, with non-woven wallpaper, the glue is water-based, meaning there is no smell associated with it, it is non-toxic and is easy to strip off the wall. Try an accent wall Accent walls are extremely popular. Decorate your house with a wallpaper accent wall in the foyer, bedroom or the powder room. Hunt suggests adding an accent wall at the head of your bed to bring some colour to your bedroom. Use wallpaper framed with molding to create a beautiful and unique headboard. "You can pick something bold with a bold print or you can pick darker colours," Hunt said. "You can have fun with it." Wallpaper inside wood paneling If your wood paneling feels too bare, you can mix it up with wallpaper. Stick to one pattern or wallpaper each panel a different colour.
