Program delivers healthy lunch to kids at camp by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 23 | Friday, July 22, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Through the school year, about one million youths in Canada depend on school lunch programs, but when school's out for summer, many of them go without a lunch, says Barry Telford, president of Sodexo Canada. Recognizing the gap, Sodexo Canada's Stop Hunger Foundation created Feeding Our Future, an initiative that began 15 years ago and grew into a national movement aimed at providing children in need of a nutritious lunch. The program's thousands of volunteers have prepared more than a million meals altogether. This summer, it expects to serve 135,000 free lunches to at-risk children in nine Canadian cities, including Oakville. Locally, 6,000 meals will be delivered to summer programs run in Oakville by the end of this summer. At Camp Dakota day camp, run by Front Line Outreach and held in an affordable housing complex in Oakville Monday (July 11), cofounder Ron Shantz admitted food security is a big issue facing many in Oakville. Shantz founded Front Line Outreach with his wife Joyce and said while some people may be able to bring a good lunch, others may not have anything to bring at all. The meal provided by the Feeding Our Future initiative, he continued, helps level the playing Volunteers with Front Line Outreach serve lunch (sandwiches and fruit) to kids at Camp Dakota. The food is free, thanks to Sodexo Canada's Feed Our Future program that is run in Halton by Food for Life. "Everyone gets the same lunch. It (the program) provides a good quality, nutritious and balanced lunch," he said. He said each camper daily receives a sandwich, veggies, such as carrots and celery with ranch dip, juice and water, a Granola bar and some fruit, like the Granny Smith apples many children were munching on that day. Having the meal prepared and provided helps Front Line Outreach focus its resources in other areas, said Shantz. "The underlying purpose of the camp is to build self-esteem for the campers, LITs (leaders in training) and staff," he said, noting in eight weeks, the camp touches the lives of more than 300 children aged five to 12 years. "If they have good self-esteem, they're less likely to be bullied." The camp, which has been running in lowincome areas over the last five years, provides children living in those communities with an experience they may not otherwise get if it wasn't brought directly to them, Shantz explained. It gives children, who don't have other opportunities to connect to a safe place, to belong and to connect with some great role models, he said. "Any child we have in our camp programs, whatever they aspire to be, whatever they want to be, we will try to help them get there along the way." see Volunteers on p.24 DENNIS' AUTO SERVICE s r r TM Ser ving Oakville Since 1990 DENNIS CIACCIA Owner/Operator Closed for holidays from Aug. 1 - Aug. 6. 501 SPEERS RD.
