OPP and construction crew save swan on QEW by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 25 | Friday, July 22, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and a few construction workers succeeded in saving a swan, which nearly waddled out onto the QEW Thursday (July 21). Around 10 a.m., Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said police received numerous calls about the bird as it made its way along the shoulder of the QEW near Bronte Road. "It seemed to be in a bit of distress or maybe dehydrated. Looking for water, looking for help," said Schmidt. "We called for some assistance, but before animal control could come up, the officers and some construction workers grabbed a blanket and we were able to corral it, corner it and capture it." Schmidt said the swan was removed from the highway and taken to a park off Bronte Road. An animal control officer with the Oakville and Milton Humane Society (OMHS) said the swan had no visible injuries. A more detailed examination was not possible as the swan was healthy enough to avoid being recaptured. "We don't have any concerns for him or his health," said Laura Mackasey, an OMHS animal protective services manager. "He doesn't appear to have been hit or anything like that." "We were able to get it out of a place of hazard," he said. "If it had walked out into traffic I'm sure cars would have been swerving all over the place and it would have been a big mess."
