Ancaster evened up in the final frame but just when it looked like the game might be pushed into overtime, Matthew Lorito scored the goal that would soon stand up as both the game winner and series clincher. Ryan McMahon had a pair of goals and Patrick Readshaw a single marker. Assists in the game went to Jordan Bortolotti (2), Jacob Legein and Jason Prolas. Oakville put themselves in a position to clinch the series by winning the third game 3-1 (for a 2-1 series lead). Oakville scored early and then, in the third peri od, added the eventual winning goal and an empty net insurance marker. Goals came from Steven Merrick, Ryan McMahon and Patrick Readshaw. Assists on the goals were from Schlonies, Old and Readshaw. The second game was definitely the worst for Oakville, as they were heavily beaten, 10-4. The Rangers fell behind 4-0 after one period, and were down by seven before Oakville put one on the scoreboard. Oakville's markers were from Joshua Ceccarelli, Ryan McMahon, Schlonies, and Jason Prolas. The assists for the Rangers were from Grant Kozlik (2), Prolas, Jordan Bortolotti, Patrick Readshaw, Steven Merrick, Conner McMonagle and Matthew Lorito. Oakville opened up the series with a close 2-1 win. Goals were scored by Patrick Readshaw and Jacob Legein. Assists were from Ryan McMahon (2) and Matthew Lorito. Thrilling consolation final The Oakville Vytis minor ban tam girls, playing their best basket ball of the season, made a valiant run at the provincial championships earlier this month in Scarborough. The weekend got off to a rough start with the 14th-ranked Vytis squad losing 35-23 to Welland Warriors (ranked 8th) on Friday night. Vytis squandered a 15-10 halftime lead due to some costly turnovers and lacklustre free-throw shooting. The loss to Welland meant Vytis would have to defeat perennial powerhouse Transway (ranked 3rd) from Hamilton in order to stay on the championship side of the draw. They came up a little short, los ing 38-26 in a hard-fought match. "I think we were a little intimi dated at the outset and let them build a sizeable halftime lead (1710)," said Coach Hector Corkum. "Although we fought back to with in three points in the 4th quarter, we just didn't have enough experience against a top-flight club to deal with their superior rebounding." The next opponent on the sched ule was 11th ranked Pelham Panthers. Facing elimination, Vytis dug down deep and turned in a gutsy 45-40 win. The girls atoned for their sins of earlier in the day by shooting a very respectable 13-23 from the line and rebounding tena (S e e 'V ytis' p age D5) O akville Volkswagen 557 Ken* Street, Oakville (905) 844-3285 <£* fo r I There's a whole new world out there...
