Building to be dedicated debt free By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR A taste of Cape Cod has come to Bronte. The congregation of First Church of Christ, Scientist - also known as Christian Science, had decided their new white church building would resemble a large cozy beach house - not a tradi tional church with a high steeple. Instead of a traditional church tower, a copula with windows and a copper roof captures the light for the skylight, allowing natural light into the sanctuary which seats 80 on padded pews. Downstairs is a reading room and nursery school, all with a 12-foot ceiling, to allow natural light to come in through the oversized basement windows. A lift ensures the building is fully accessible to the physically disabled. The new building, at the comer of Rebecca Street and Bronte Road, was completed two years ago. The first service was held on July 15, 1998. On May 7th, the building will be dedicated debt free. The public is invited to attend this ded ication at 3 p.m. The entire project, including the land, cost about $700,000, says Peter Tosswill, a trustee and maintenance man of the church. "It was completed on budget." The property, at 2522 Rebecca St. W., was purchased in September 1997. The building, designed by Gren Weis Architect & Associates of Oakville, is "inspired by" a similarly designed Christian Science church building in Brewster in the Cape Cod area, said Tosswill. `T h e church in Cape Cod was photographed, the congregation okayed the idea, and Weis came up with a conceptualized design," complete with multiple roof lines and New England style case ment windows. `T h e whole idea was to create the appearance of a Cape Cod house."
