Wednesday, May 10, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER > 3% esearch from Carlton Cards and the International Mass Retailers Association (IMRA) reveals con sumers spend more on Mother's Day than Father's Day. The num ber one item purchased for mom is a card. Nearly 80 per cent o f the population w ill buy one this year. Consumers also tend to buy fancier cards for mom that for dad. "O u r research shows most people d on 't w ant to econ om ize on their mothers," says Susy Miranda, Carlton Cards' manager o f seasonal cards. "A lthough w e do offer value cards priced .99 cents to $1.99, the more elaborate cards con sistently outsell them every year." Mother's Day is Canada's secondlargest holiday for gift-giving, the leading day o f the year for long dis tance phone calls, the busiest day for restaurant dining and the third largest greeting card holiday. Canadians w ill also buy more Mother's Day cards than Father's Day cards. "Some o f the dispari ty occurs because w om en tend to purchase not only for their own mothers, but for all the mothers in their extended fam i ly," M iranda explains. "This can include step mothers, daughters, grandmothers, mothers-inlaw, godmothers, aunts and even their friends w h o are m oms."
