They used the CANCOM satellite to track the truck's progress. Atlas Van Lines gives students communications & geography lesson Satellite used to track truck driver's trip through U.S. Atlas Van Lines (Canada) Ltd. has partnered with the Grade 3 class (Ms. Alejandre & Ms. Soper) of Holy Family School, Oakville, working on an exciting social studies project. The project entails following the journey of a long distance truck driver that uses satellite commu nications. Atlas Van Lines #1 National Quality Award Driver, Pat Patterson, was invited to the school to discuss his function, and how he uses satellite com munications. With his full rig there, stu dents actually climbed onboard and saw the satellite computer working. The students classroom com puter is connected to the Atlas Network, in which they daily track and communicate where Mr. Patterson at any given time. The students are plotting the positions on maps enhancing their mapping skills. They also send messages to the driver and Patterson responds describing the geo graphical surroundings as to where he is at, enhancing the students skills of geography, computers and communications. Messages take on average less than 10 seconds to transmit to the truck via the CANCOM satellite to anywhere in North America. Ralph Goodale, o f Natural Resources; John M anley, Industry; D avid A nderson, Environm ent: and D avid C ollenette, Transport, were invited to go for a spin by Bobbie Gaunt, President and CEO o f Ford of Canada. Ford's latest P2000, is a lightw eight ver sion of a family sedan, representing a technol ogy Canadians could be driving by 2004, when Ford plans to bring fuel cell vehicles into limited production. The P2000 is Ford's first, no-compromise, family-sized fuel cell research vehicle. The car demonstrates how pure hydrogen, convert ed to electricity within Ballard's revolutionary fuel cell, can provide clean, zero-emission power for a new generation of automobiles. The system weighs in at ju st over 170 kilo grams and produces 100 horsepow er at peak. Fuel cells are energy conversion devices that generate electricity by combining hydro gen and oxygen w ithout com bustion. Hydrogen, which can be stored on board in either gaseous or liquid form, is electrochemically com bined with oxygen from the air to produce electricity. The only em ission from the P2000 is w ater vapour. "It's a perfect exam ple o f the win-win solu tion we m ust deliver in order to be successful - one with no com prom ises to the environ m ent or to consum er expectations," said Gaunt. G aunt also lauded A lcan A lum inum Limited, which has invested some $200 m il lion since the early 1990s to develop the spe cial alloys for both the P2000's sleek body and m any o f its structural parts. A lcan's investm ent also yielded the new bonding and w elding technology required to build the P2000, which is about 40 per cent lighter than a current Ford Taurus. * "A t Ford, we w ant to set environm ent stan dards, not ju s t m eet them ," said Gaunt. "T hat's the difference between genuine lead ership and m ere com pliance." 842-2252 The Oakville Beaver Oakville's Award Winning Community Newspaper Family Services Alcoholics Anonymous If you drink, that's your business If you want to quit, That's Ours!
