Wednesday, May 10, 2000 T H E O A K V ILLE BEAVER A7 H a v e y o u r s a y o n f u t u r e Letters to the Editor o f n o r t h la n d s For 20 years, in the environs o f O ak v ille alo n e -o n w o o d lo ts, on g re en sp ac es, on fa rm la n d s and countryside, a system o f develo p m ent, w hich can only be described as ruthless has run ram pant. W hat little is left unpaved, and w hat ought to be protected, are the green areas and w oodlots north of Hwy. 5. In 1978, the O M B (O n ta rio M u n icip al B oard) o v erruled O akville C ouncil and turned the bulldozers loose everyw here north o f the QEW. The bulldozers have now reached Hwy. 5 and there is a grow ing groundsw ell of dism ay at the prospect o f continued unsustain able land decim ation north o f that line. It was this sam e public aw areness o f the need to start preserving sensi- tive natural areas that successfully prevailed on the issue o f the Toronto O ak R idge M oraine, w hen the Province said "no" to developm ent. Sim ilarly, a study o f the land north o f Hwy. 5 here in O akville, iden tifies not only species in decline, but also points out that most o f the tableland, and w oodlots occur on the T rafalgar M oraine, the head w aters o f six m ajor creek s in O akville. We cannot allow the fate o f this area and the w ildlife who depend on it to be decided by developers, it is doubtful in the light o f today's pub lic concerns, that the OMB or any o ther au th o rity w ould allow it either. T he Town o f O akville is holding its m eeting on Thurs. M ay 18th at 7:30 p.m . at the M unicipal B uilding (1225 T rafalgar R d.) T his is the chance (m aybe the last one) for any body and everybody to turn out and dem and m ore stringent control o f land devastation around O akville. The larger the turnout, the better. A .M . Since first adopted by Town C ouncil in 1984, there have been hundreds o f approved am endm ents to the Z oning B y-law and several review s o f certain com ponents o f the docum ent. However, no com prehensive structural review o f the Z oning By-law has ever been undertaken, and over time, the Zoning By-law has becom e outdated, very cum bersom e, convoluted, not user- friendly, and difficult to interpret and administer. T he E conom ic D evelopm ent Strategy Study, adopted by Town Council in June, 1997 recom m ended, in part, that a w holesale review o f the T ow n's Z oning By-law be undertaken, with specific em phasis on changes to the existing industrial zoning categories.
