The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 27, 2006 - 27 Training can help you run a marathon in stride eing a `runner' is almost like a status symbol these days, and one that seems unattainable to the average per son. Yes, running is more than just hitting the streets in a pair of shoes, but it does not have to be beyond your reach. YMCA of Oakville Coordinator of Group Health, Fitness, and Recreation, Lisa Newman, says that the key to learning to run is proper guidance and training and having a group of like-minded folks to run with. "Without education and sup port, you will likely start to feel aches and pains pretty quickly, and that will turn you off. You need to learn about things like technique, equipment, and nutri tion. And you need to get support from a group who will help you to get out there and just do it." The Y will hold a series of B Running Clinics for its members this spring, following a small pro gram in 2005. "We had a good response last year with the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital 5K run as a goal. A lot of our new runners continue to run now, and love it," said Lisa. "Setting a goal and suc ceeding was very important to the group." This year's running clinics have several goals in mind to meet the needs of folks at differ ent stages. A 12-week clinic starts in early February, with a final goal to run the Mississauga HalfMarathon in May. The shorter sixweek clinic will begin in late March and be targeted to those who would like to participate in either the Mississauga 5km or 10km run. About picking a distance to run, Y Group Fitness Team Leader Kathy Cooper says that you need to just make sure that you give yourself the time to get ready for the goal that you choose. "Everyone thinks that certain landmarks are elusive, but they're not really...it' s all about train ing." Given that training is the key, it's important to get advice from experienced trainers. The Y's team includes both Lisa and Kathy. Lisa is the veteran, with 20 years of running under her belt and four full marathons to her credit. Kathy is relatively new to running - she started two years ago - but has already completed a full marathon. Proper training for a run also includes cross-training, which is part of the advan tage of being a Y member. "Weight-lifting can strengthen the muscles around your knee and make you less vulnerable to joint stress and injury. Swimming and climbing can be beneficial as well for breathing and core stability." The Y' s program will also'feature sup port from 27-year-old experienced runner Amy Lawson, of the Foot Tools store in Burlington.'Amy came from a running family. She ran all through high school and really enjoys the excitement and energy that she gets from participating in the races. Her latest goal is the running pin nacle - the 100km `ultra marathon'!
