Open house aims to build bridges with knowledge by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 1 3 | Friday, September 23, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER Residents are invited to Meet Your Muslim Neighbours this Saturday (Sept. 24). The open house takes place between noon and 4 p.m. and is being hosted by the A1 Falah Islamic Centre, at 391 Bumhamthorpe Rd. E. People are invited to drop by and tour the mosque, ask and leam about Islam, take part in family activities and enjoy international cuisine. Dr. Aliya Khan, who is on the events planning committee, said the goal is to open dialogue and dispel misconceptions people might have about the religion of Islam. "We want to invite our neighbours, bring them into our mosque, share conversation and dialogue and have a nice barbecue and a fun time for the family, so we recognize that we're all Canadians, we Dr. Aliya Khan all love each other, we want to do what' s best for our community and for our country and we want to break down these barriers of hate and these barriers of violence and fear," said Khan. "When we remove the fear and sit down to talk to each other then we realize that we're all the same and we have the same goals and aspirations for our families and for our communities." She noted there is concern in the Muslim community the "true message of Islam" is not being communicated. "ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) does not speak for Islam," said Khan, noting it is a terror organization. The open house will offer numerous presentations on topics, such as women in Islam, Islam and peace and harmony with the global community, Muslim contributions to science and medicine and the basic core beliefs of Islam. Face painting, henna, a bouncy castle and other fun activities will also be offered. "We just want people to recognize that the message of Islam is of love and goodwill through all of God' s creation and we just want to share that message," she said. In addition to town halls like the one held in Oakville North-Burlington, we have established a special all-party committee to review a wide variety of reform options to ensure a completely bi-partisan approach to election reform. MPs across Canada are hosting town hall discussions with citizens in their ridings to gain valuable feedback and insights to share with the minister of democratic institutions, from which she will make recommendations to Cabinet on the way forward with our electoral system. I encourage all Canadians to help shape our future electoral system and I want to ensure the opinions and concerns of all Oakville NorthBurlington residents are heard at the federal level. We need to hear from all Canadians about what they want in a modernized electoral system. Together, we must determine what electoral system best represents the will of all Canadians and build on the great democratic system our country has enjoyed for nearly 150 years. -- Pam Damoff is the Member o f Parliament fo r Oakville North-Burlington.
