Sailing club an integral part of harbour's history continued from p.24 This community spirit extends beyond the sailing programs to support many local charities and neighbourhood groups. OYS co-hosts the annual Easter Seals Regatta and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton fundraiser events, as well as supporting underprivileged children with sailing school bursaries. OYS is also an ambassador for Oakville with members volunteering to greet visiting boats every weekend during the summer. It hosts more than 200 visiting boats each season, all coming to enjoy our downtown and the waterfront. Sailing is both a peaceful pastime and a competitive sport that connects people to the water instilling a profound respect for the power of wind. OYS manages to balance both of these interests with a mix of cruising and racing programs. Founded by racers, OYS has maintained a competitive program from the beginning with recreational weeknight series racing and annual weekend regattas. OYS sailors are known throughout the great lakes as avid sports people with many accolades returning to Oakville on their boats. In 1995, OYS merged with the Oakville Harbour Yacht Club bringing a new spirit of exploration to the club. Members can choose to race or spend weekends cruising Lake Ontario with friends. Passion for sailing runs deep in Oakville and OYS has been here to support and promote the sport for the last 70 years serving generations of sailors.
