www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 16, 2016 | 6 Help keep Terry's dream alive "...but I might not make it, and if I don't make it, then the Marathon of Hope better continue. It has to go on without me." - Terry Fox 1980 Canadian hero Terry Fox may have lost his personal battle with cancer, but he lives on despite the devastating disease. In so doing, he did triumph over cancer. Now, it's up to us to carry on with his dream such that we, collectively, eventually beat the disease and, through nding a cure, win the war on cancer. Thanks to Terry's vision and personal courage and conviction, we have advanced signi cantly on cancer. Research and new medical advances mean that today, more than three decades after Terry fought the disease, others diagnosed with the type of cancer he had, do not meet Terry's fate. Cancer can and does affect each of us -- nary a person doesn't know someone who has been diagnosed. Some forms of cancer are more unforgiving than others. They move with stealth, surface unexpectedly and take a horri c toll. A lot has been done to ght cancer, but more must be done. A cure must be found. This Sunday (Sept. 18) we can carry Terry and his vision in our hearts and use our legs to take steps to beat cancer. Many are now survivors of cancer, thanks to the great strides made in cancer research and treatment -- life-saving advances that are the result of the impressive strides made by Terry when he found the courage for his Marathon of Hope. Despite the pain, Terry was unrelenting in his refusal to give in or give up. Today, many of us must be just as unrelenting as we ght a diagnosis, support others in their journey to health, and press toward nding a cure. We can walk out the door Sunday and do something about it. The Oakville Terry Fox Run takes place this Sunday, and all Oakville residents are invited to honour Terry Fox and continue his Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. Oakville's 36th annual Terry Fox Run will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18 at Coronation Park. Walk, bike, board, skate, run, push a stroller or walk the dog along a beautiful lake-side 2K, 5K or 10K route. The run starts at 10 a.m., registration at 9 a.m. 10:00 a.m., with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m. For the 36th year, Oakville residents are being asked to do what Terry asked so many years ago: to raise $1 for every Oakville resident, or $187,200. The Oakville Beaver team will be there. Your neighbours, friends and family will be there. Terry Fox still triumphs. Cancer can be beaten. The Oakville Beaver welcomes letters from its readers.
