28 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, c ^ Walker celebrates 20 years of living cancer free Donna A. Murray of Oakville is starting 2006 off with new motivation and fresh hopes by participating in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Hospital. She will be joining thou sands of other dedicated women and men in Toronto on Sept. 8-10 to walk 60 kilo metres over two days. Murray will raise signifi cant money and awareness by taking her social activism to the streets and participating in this event for Princess Margaret Hospital. With one in nine Canadian women diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, participants in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer have the opportunity to personally make a differ ence in the fight against breast cancer. Collectively, the participants will have an enormous impact on breast cancer research funding in our province. She has decided to partici pate in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Hospital, because... "I want to honour my 20th anniversary as a can cer survivor. TVventy years agoTdid not believe that I had many tomorrows as I grap pled with the diagnosis that I now had an imperfection within my body. I struggled to find ways that would enable me to withstand the emotion al and physical challenges this would present. There was something enigmatic about this life-threatening news as I felt my body had betrayed me. End The Weekend to Princess Margaret Hospital my ability to develop and grow to my fullest potential. Three symbols evolved during this process: rainbows, yellow roses and trees. The rainbows becanie my cleansing colours. I wouid envision the whole spectrum of the rainbow cleansing my body and it also became an umbrella that pro tected me from negative thoughts. The yellow roses provided extra protection as I climbed up the stem and hid amongst the petals, a safe haven as the softness of the petals soothed the soreness from the surgery and later radiation. The trees offered hope, for their seasons of change symbolized endings and new beginnings. I began to evolve season to season for I believe that change is the very essence of life. You too can offer the gift of change by choosing to walk or by donat ing directly to me. With your support breast cancer will be eliminated. I am a survivor!" To make a greater impact, Murray, participant ID # 504086-7, has set a personal fundraising goal of $3,000. To help her reach this goal, visit www.endcancer.ca to make a donation online or call 416815-WALK (9255).
