Rehtaeh Parsons' mom to bring `critical' message by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Thursday, October 6, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The mother of an alleged sexual assault victim, who later took her own life, will speak at Sheridan College Thursday, Oct. 13 to raise awareness of the consequences of violence and bullying. Leah Parsons' daughter, Rehtaeh, was 17 years old when she suicided at her home in Dartmouth, N.S. Her death took place 17 months after she was allegedly sexually assaulted at a party in 2013. Bullying and shaming from her peers followed after a photo taken during the alleged incident was shared online. Rehtaeh's mom speaks out In addition to telling her daughter's story, Parsons will speak about the importance of supporting victims with kindness and care. The Halton Women's Place, Sheridan College and Sheridan College Communications and Literary Studies Instructor/PhD Researcher Nicolette Little are hosting the event titled, For Her We Speak. Other speakers for the evening include Oakville North-Burlington MP Pam Damoff, who is also vice-chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for the Status of Women. Damoff will address the Canadian government's increased role in fighting violence against women and girls. Sheridan President Jeff Zabudsky will discuss the college's commitment to anti-violence. A question-and-answer period with Parsons, Damoff, gender studies experts at Sheridan College and members of Sheridan's newly- created Sexual Assault Task Force will follow. Critical message "We see this event, and Leah's message, as critical for both our students and our community," said Stephanie Samboo, an associate dean with Sheridan's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. "We look forward to having Oakville and surrounding community residents join us We see this event, and Leah's message, as critical for both our students and our community. Associate Dean, Sheridan College Stephanie Samboo Oct. 13." Little, who came up with the idea for the event, said Sheridan College and Halton Women's Place were natural choices as co-organizers. "I've worked on Halton Women's Place's Hope in High Heels event for years, and this shelter does a lot to support survivors in our communities," she said. "Sheridan College has also taken on amazing antiviolence initiatives in recent years." For Her We Speak begins at 7 p.m., at Sheridan College's Marquee. Admission to the event is free for students.
