Lorne Scots welcome prince by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 37 | Thursday, October 6, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Members of the Lorne Scots Regiment celebrated their regiment's 150th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 24 with a military parade and monument unveiling in Oakville, Brampton and Georgetown. The Oakville unveiling took place in George's Square and was attended by Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent and Colonel-in-Chief of the Lorne Scots. Major General Paul Nanson, the Commandant of Sandhurst Military Academy in England was also present as was Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, Oakville MP John Oliver, Oakville North-Burlington MP Pam Damoff, Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn and Canadian and British senior military officers. A military parade, known as the Trooping of the Colours, took place in Brampton. Military officials said this is a rare parade in Canada and celebrates the history of the regiment. The Lorne Scots' history actually pre-dates its official formation tracing back to the late 1700's when settlers in the area would take up arms to defend their land against invaders. Since that time the regiment has sent officers and soldiers to both world wars, Korea, peacekeeping operations, Afghanistan, disaster relief operations and most recently the Ukraine. "The Lorne Scots celebrated 150 years of service to Canada and the communities we serve in Peel, Dufferin and Halton counties. Thousands of soldiers from our region have served in the Lorne Scots and our predecessor regiments from Peel and Halton dating back to 1866," said Lieutenant-Colonel Duane Hickson, Commanding Officer of the Lorne Scots Regiment. "The weekend was filled with pomp and pageantry celebrating our proud service as we recognize our strong history which has made the Lorne Scots the finest regiment in Canada." Prince Edward, The Duke of Kent, and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton unveil a monument dedicated to the Lorne Scots Regiment in George's Square in Oakville Saturday, Sept. 24. submitted photo DIAMOND DIAMOND FOAM4U.ca · · · · · Quality Mattresses Natural Organic Foam Soya Foam Memory Gel Foam Custom Cut Foam Voted Best Accountant by Oakville Beaver Readers for 10 Consecutive Years CPA, CA, MBA, B.
