"As more and more Oakville residents choose cycling as their preferred mode of transportation, it is incumbent upon us to make sure our roads are safe for all," said Oliver, in a press release. "I'm delighted that our federal minister of transportation is establishing a task force to explore and find ways to discuss safety measures to reduce injuries and fatalities, and in particular using technology to reduce collisions between vulnerable road users and heavy trucks." While cycling infrastructure is important, Damoff said education and enforcement are critical aspects of any national cycling safety strategy. "Dedicated bike lanes and truck side guards are great ideas, but unless both motorists and cyclists know, respect and follow the rules of the road, someone is going to get hurt," she said. "When motorists drive in bike lanes or open car doors without checking their mirrors or when cyclists fail to stop at intersections, we are still going to have accidents.
