10 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 17, 2006 A toast to downtown Motoaki Aoki of Mye Japanese Restaurant has been offering perfect Japanese cuisine to the Oakville community for the past nineteen years and doesn't have plans to stop any tim e soon. Mye Restaurant, located at 143 Church Street, first opened its doors in October 1986, making it Oakville's first Japanese restaurant. Finding a common ground between Canadian and Japanese expectations was difficult at first, but the community slowly began to discover just how exciting Japanese cuisine could be. Today, customers are excited to be ordering delicious Japanese dishes such as raw sushi or sashimi, and enjoying their unique charms. One of the signature elements of Mye Japanese th a t returning customers have come to love is their collection of over 900 personalized sake cups, each reserved for a Single specific cus tomer. On return trips to Japan, Aoki seeks out the most distinctive and engaging sake cups that might be offered and brings them back here to Oakville. The cups are than purchased by Mye Japanese customers and given a unique number so that it will always be yours alone to enjoy. When you're not at the restaurant, the cup is kept safely on display in elegant wall cases. Aoki explains, "The collection of cups is always grow- UMMER 2006 ing. It is a way that w e can strengthen the bonds between the restaurant and the customers, so th a f when you come here you feel like you have truly come home." In order to keep his high quality food to his standards, Aoki makes the trip to the east side of Toronto to buy from suppliers who have been with him since day one. Patrons of the restau rant enjoy the food so much that they often ask for the recipes used or take home portions of the exceptional sauces that are served. As a treat for those who enjoy the sauces so much Aoki has chosen to bottle and sell them so that his cus tomers can enjoy their favourite flavours from the comforts of their homes.
