"Dominion was just down the street, and it had a large counter with clerks bringing the groceries to customers. We were the first grocery store in Long Branch where customers could pick out their own gro ceries." They also made deliveries. "I had one lady customer who I never met or saw, but I kept her in groceries," said Lorraine. "She would phone and say, `I need some food,' and tell me what she needed. "We had five employees at one tim e," she continued. Lorraine ran the store on her own when Harold was in the air force from 1942-1945. "I was lucky," he said, "I did n 't have to go overseas." . He was stationed in Ontario and British Columbia. "When I was in Base Borden near Barrie I was home about every other week and home every other day when I was stationed in Mount Hope in Hamilton. I ju st hitch-hiked back and forth." They have two sons born 14 years apart, Brian, of* Port Elgin, and Jon, of Oakville. Prior to moving to Churchill Place in June 2002 to be closer to their youngest son, the Halls enjoyed their retirement years traveling and gardening. ^ x "We've made 43 trips since I retired," said Harold, "includ ing bus trips in Canada." The couple enjoyed eight winters in Tucson, Arizona, traveled through Europe and enjoyed four cruises, three in the Caribbean and one part way up the west coast towards Alaska. With their traveling and gardening days behind them, the Halls are enjoying life at Churchill Place, and partici pate in its yoga and fitness classes. "And, we like the entertainment," said Lorraine.
