Cuba, in a new . airmail sports set, has one value featuring baseball (illustrat ed above) with a batter ready to hit the ball as it com es over the plate. There have been quite a few stamps issued over the years to this most popular o f N orth Am erican sports. The United State* in 1939 issued * com m em orative stamp to mark the 100th anniversary of. the first recorded game o f baseball played at Cooperstown, N.Y. The Philippines in 1934 had a sports set, dne value o f which showed a batter about to hit the ball with the catcher getting ready to catch the ball. Panama in a 1938 set fo r a Cen tral A m erican sports festival fea tured baseball on one value. Co lombia on a 1935 sports set shows a runner sliding to the home plate cm one value o f the issue. Nicar agua on a 1940 set features wo- men's softball on one value and a player sliding safely to base on another value o f both regular and airmail issues. Outside the Am ericas there have been few countries which have had stamps featuring baseball. Japan issued a sports set in 1948 which included one value with a baseball scene. Liberia in 1955 had a sports set, one value o f w hich shows a batter hitting the ball with the catcher and umpire standing be hind him. These are som e o f the stamps which have been issued by differ ent countries to this popular sport. A collection o f such stamps makes a very interesting specialty and none o f the stamps are valuable.
