That's why they were recognized for their efforts Saturday, Nov. 5 at the CCS Halton Community Office's annual volunteer appreciation luncheon, held in Oakville at the soon-to-be open St. Luke's Community Centre. The event, which had 140 volunteers in attendance, featured guest speaker Mark Hierlihy, CCS Ontario executive director, and an awards ceremony. A total of 88 volunteers were given various Years of Service and Community Impact accolades. "You make lives in many ways (by) giving your time and money. You're making other people's lives while making a life for yourself. It's a real privilege to be here today (Nov. 5) to talk to you about the Canadian Cancer Society," said Hierlihy. The CCS Ontario executive director said he was fortunate to have civic parents who taught Celebrating Volunteers, a volunteer appreciation luncheon was held by the Canadian Cancer Society, Halton Community Office at St. Luke's Community Centre Saturday, Nov. 5. "I grew up on a farm, where we took care of our neighbours. In many ways, I think that is the sentiment that actually created the Canadian Cancer Society in the first place," said Hierlihy. He recalled the beginnings of CCS 78 years ago initiated by a group of volunteers gathering in their homes, church basements and community centres to help their friends, families and neighbours with cancer. "I don't think they could have understood the movement they were creating. They probably weren't doing it to create a movement," said Hierlihy. "There is no doubt in my mind that you have seen the society change over the years. You have seen fundraising go up and down, you have seen different generations come and go. It's important to acknowledge some of the change-makers." Fundraising, in particular, has changed significantly, Hierlihy said, citing the residential and daffodil campaigns and Relay for Life as examples. see Volunteers on p.39 an active healthy lifestyle starts here Aching Feet?
