Mom was born in Chatham, Ontario and was the youngest of 5 children. Despite the challenges of growing up during the great depression and through the war years, she enjoyed a very happy childhood. After finishing high school Mom worked at Chatham Stenographic Service and the Chatham Board of Trade. Mom met Dad when she was involved in a traffic accident and he was the police officer called to the scene. The family moved to Oakville in 1960 and as was typical of the time, Mom stayed home to raise the children while Dad was away all week at work. They believed busy children did not have time to get into trouble so life revolved around keeping the kids active in scouting, sports, music and part-time jobs. Mom was happiest when surrounded by family sharing a meal. She was a wonderful cook and a talented and creative knitter. She loved to gamble and we all knew to stay away from the driveway at 6:30 on Monday nights to avoid being run over as she raced to bingo. Mom enjoyed trips to Casino Niagara and meeting with friends at Tim Hortons. She also enjoyed an active social life participating in seniors and church groups. Mom will be forever in our hearts. She loved, was loved, and will be sadly missed by family and friends. Predeceased by her husband Wayne, son William and daughter-in-law Mary Ellen Sawyer. Mom is survived by her children, John (Marianne) Sawyer, Susan (Pierre) Gagnon, Barb Parker and Patrick (Nancy) Sawyer, grandchildren, Theresa (Martin) Wardrop, James Sawyer, Robert (Tiffany) Sawyer, Stephen (Kayla) Sawyer, Joey Gagnon, Calvin Sawyer, Nicholas Sawyer and great grandchildren, Connor Wardrop, Levon Sawyer and Nicole Sawyer. We would like to thank Dr. Mira Backo-Shannon and the staff at Lakeshore Place for the outstanding care they provided for Mom over the years. The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life at Munn's United Church, 5 Dundas Street East & Sixth Line, Oakville Ontario L6H 7C4 on Saturday, November 26 at 11:30 a.m. Anyone wishing to commemorate Halen's life is asked to make a donation in her name to Munn's United Church or the Salvation Army in Oakville. Missing pair of Oakville brothers died in pond by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Two bodies found near a submerged BMW in a Mississauga pond Tuesday, Nov. 8 have been positively identified as missing Oakville brothers Hamza Khan, 22, and Shah Rukh Khan, 20. Peel Regional Police said autopsies conducted Thursday (Nov. 10) reveal the brothers drowned and that there were no other signs of trauma. The Khan brothers had been missing since 9:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4. They had last been seen in the area of Thomas Street and Tenth Line in Mississauga. Their car, a silver BMW, was pulled from a pond a short distance away from the area -- at Ninth Line and Thomas Street -- just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8. Investigators do not believe there are other vehicles involved with the incident, police say. They are appealing for witnesses who may have observed or have video footage of this vehicle in the area of Thomas Street between and Tenth and Ninth Line the evening of Nov. 4. A man who described himself as an older sibling of the Khan brothers, said on his Facebook page they "were like sons" to him. "Both of them were my arms. I lost everything today," Malik Sikander, who reportedly lives in the United Kingdom, wrote. "My brothers died a Hamza Khan very painful death. After the car crash their car went into the pond. Airbags deployed, yet somehow they managed to escape through the sun roof. Shocked by the car crash and cold water they must have been confused and were swimming in the wrong Shah Rukh Khan direction. They were not good swimmers. They must have cried and shouted their lungs out for help and must have been calling my name to come and help them."
