www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, November 18, 2016 | 14 Birthday began with ride to school in fire truck by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff It's a birthday Ramin Mirza won't soon forget -- rolling into school aboard an Oakville Fire truck Tuesday (Nov. 15). The eight-year-old, St. Luke Elementary School student arrived in style with an entourage of Oakville firefighters, as well as his two younger brothers, in tow. Ramin earned the opportunity for himself -- and his brothers Rayan, 6, and Rojan, 4 -- by entering a colouring contest hosted by the Oakville Fire Department during its Open House on Sept. 24. The annual open house, held at the Oakville Fire Training Facility off of South Service Road, invited the community to learn about fire safety through rescue demonstrations, presentations and other activities as part of Fire Prevention Week. In choosing a date for the special lift to school, Ramin's mother, Lobna Mirza, suggested it take place on Ramin's birthday. Oakville Fire was more than happy to fulfill the request, with Public Education, Special Projects officer Glenn Barwell noting it was the department's first time running a contest like this, but will likely not be the last, given the positive feedback. Although the ride was less than five minutes, Ramin told the Oakville Beaver how exciting it was to pull into the school driveway and see his principal, teacher and Grades 3 and 4 classmates all waiting -- just for him. As he got off the truck, he was quickly surrounded by his friends who wished him a Happy Birthday. They also asked him what it was like riding in the front of the truck. "It was really good," he St. Luke's Elementary School student Ramin Mirza, left, recieved a ride to school in a Oakville Fire Department ladder truck Tuesday (Nov. 15) morning. Describing his adventure, he noted how he watched the mirrors and imagined what it was like to be a firefighter. Ramin added it was definitely a great start to his birthday, an experience many children his age only dream about. His parents Lobna and Kam Mirza said all three of their boys were waiting in anticipation over the last month to go for the ride. "When they saw the fire truck outside, they went crazy," Lobna described. They added they're thrilled for their family's luck as the colouring contest winner was randomly selected. Rayan has also expressed wanting to become a firefighter when he grows up. The brothers each received a hug and a stuffed Dalmatian from Sparky the Fire Dog. St. Luke principal Emi Bakaic said the school community is so thrilled for Ramin and proud of him for exercising his citizenship by attending the Fire Prevention Week open house. "It's everybody's responsibility to keep the community safe," she said, noting learning about fire safety is a great way to be actively engaged in the community.
