Snow, snow and more snow in winter forecast by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Thursday, November 24, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com If Oakville residents haven't put on their winter tires yet, now is the time to do it, meteorologists advise. "One thing to keep in mind is it's not just for the snow, it's also for temperatures. Winter tires perform better at (less than) 7C than all season or summer tires. So, with the cold, it's probably best to get them on this week," Dayna Vettese, a meteorologist with Oakvillebased The Weather Network, whose parent company is Pelmorex Media Inc., told the Oakville Beaver Tuesday (Nov. 22). "We did have some flurries in the area last weekend and we do anticipate some snow or slushy snow Wednesday (Nov. 23), leading into Thursday (Nov. 24), so it's time, it's happening. We're moving into winter." The local weather specialty network released its winter forecast Tuesday, saying it will be harsher than last year. "If you can recall last winter, it's probably not going to look a whole lot like that," Vettese said. "We were very warm. December, we were running about 6C above average; January was warm. We did have a cold spell in February last year. Aside from that, we were warm." But this year, the meteorologist noted the Great Lakes region and the Greater Toronto typically around 0C to -2C for daytime highs throughout the winter, but she anticipates, on average, temperatures being a few degrees below that this winter. "That doesn't mean we won't have days where we're feeling warmer or have some really cold days. But on average, we should be slightly below normal and it will certainly feel a lot colder because we had such a mild fall," she explained. "We reached 35C in September; we got up to 18C in November. So, we're not really set up and ready for the cold -- it's certainly going to feel a lot colder than we're used to," she said. see Brace on p.12 Oakville residents should brace for a snowy winter, according to the new winter forecast released Tuesday by Oakville-based The Weather Network. | Metroland file photo Area (GTA) could expect near below normal temperatures to make things look and feel a lot more like winter.
