The Oakville Beaver, Friday M a y 12f 2006 - 27 Ten Thousand Villages celebrates World Fair Trade Day Saturday, May 13th is celebrated around the globe as World Fair Trade Day: a time for honouring the achievements that fair trade organizations have made in strengthening international develop ment. On this day, Ten Thousand Villages of Oakville and Toronto invite community members to join them for day of fun and learning as they mark the day. "World Fair Trade Day is an opportunity to recognize the impor tance of fair wages, consistent work and long-term commitments in trading relationships", says Ingrid Heinrichs Pauls, manager of Ten Thousand Villages in Oakville at 189 Lakeshore Rd. E. "On this day, we ask people to truly make a difference - and make fair trade a habit". Purchasing fair trade products - coffee, chocolate, beautifully handcrafted personal accessories, jewellery, textiles, carvings, ceram ics and even furniture for home and garden - offer increased support to farmers and artisans in places such as Bangladesh, Uganda and Haiti by providing much needed income. As a result, their children can go to school and their families are healthier. They dare to dream of a brighter future. Around the world, thousands of people are working together to build community and change lives through fair trade. On May 13th, World Fair Trade Day events will take place in over 60 countries, including right across Canada. Locally shoppers can demonstrate their support for these efforts by celebrating and shopping at Ten Thousand Villages at 189 Lakeshore Rd. E in Oakville. Visit the store and share in the activities all day long. 10 a.m. until noon is Children's Time, where Flo Jo the Clown and her assistant will be doing face painting and balloon animals, and children (8 yrs and under) can learn about and receive their own galimoto from the Congo. At !T 3.m . story time with guest reader Pat Turner, teacher and librarian at St. Mildred's, will begin. Moon to 2 p.m. will feature Hand Henna by Farah, and offer everyone the chance to "Take the Fair Trade Challenge". Children's time will be renewed from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with hand stamping, and stick-on Ten Thousand Villages tattoos! The 2 p.m. afternoon story time features no less than guest reader Shauna Mdean of the Oakville Players. 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. will present Alice Hwang playing Native American flute and silver flute. Throughout the day there will be fair trade food and beverages to sample, a fair trade quiz which earns you a 10% discount, international music, and a gift w ith every purchase.
