D6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 24, 2000 Dessaulles looking at Canadian university for the fall (Continued from page D1) against them was som ething I will always rem em ber." C anada's ju n io r rugby program , still in its growth stages, is behind European nations in team cohesive ness because players have not had a chance to com pete together long enough. "The European countries get started playing rugby when the kids are little," he said. "Then they compete together for their nation on the U nder-16, U nder-18 and U nder-19 teams. They've been playing together for years and our team was put together a couple of weeks in advance of the world tournament." Dessaulles, who has been elected valedictorian for his school year by his peers and boasts an 88 per cent acade mic average, has received interest from American universities offering scholarships. However, he intends to do his post-secondary education in Canada. "I'm looking at Western, M cMaster or McGill," he said. "I don't want to go to the U.S. because if you get seri ously injured you can lose your schol arship and in the early days a lot of time is spent on the practice squad." Dessaulles is confident in OTHS's chances for a 30th consecutive Halton championship, but he's far from ready to pronounce his team the winner. "We respect the Notre Dame rugby program and expect to have a very com petitive gam e," he said. "I'm looking forward to the game." Coyotes improve to 3 -2 The Oakville Coyotes improved their record to 3-2 in major junior A roller hockey action last Wednesday with a 10-8 win over the Kitchener Roller Rats. The team 's depth is really begin ning to show. "We have a great balance this year," stated Ron Piercey who co coaches the team along with Ed Kirsten. "You can put out any o f our three lines and something good is going to happen, and as insurance we are backed up by two great goalies." On Wednesday night in Kitchener the team was led by Dan Bognar with 4 goals and Captain Jeff Elia who scored once and set up another five. Bognar or Boogie as his team mates call him was in the Kitchener goalie's face all night, and scored the prettiest goal o f the night on his patented backhand over the shoulder of the Roller Rat goalie right under the cross bar. "He told me he works on that shot all the time" commented Elia. "That shot takes off in a hurry. It is going to cause goalies fits this season." Elia him self had a great night, pouncing on a perfect feed from Shawn Snider and setting up another five. Strong play was also turned in by goalie Ryan Miehm, M ike Tarantino who scored two and was in on three others, Shawn Snider who collected his team leading 10th goal o f the sea son along with two helpers, and Stu M acCrimmon and Ryan Fitzsimmons each with a goal and an assist. The Coyotes next home game is Friday June 2nd at 7:30 p.m . at Oakville Arena against the Brantford Thunderhawks.
