A Royal Canadian Navy soldier aboard the HMCS Haida during the Korean War, Barber shared his experiences with St. Dominic Catholic School students and teachers on Friday, Nov. 11, during a Remembrance Day ceremony. He was given a plaque in recognition of his service to the country and educational outreach. "Their (veterans) lives will change and remain with them profoundly, until the day they die. To me, that is what a veteran is," Barber told students, teachers and guests in attendance. "Hold your hand on your heart and think about men and women who gave you freedom today." The approximately 60-minute ceremony also featured a number of more than 550 kilometres across the Greater Hamilton and Toronto Area (GHTA) to speak to audiences of all ages -- from Kindergarteners to seniors. The 83-year-old said it' s hard for veterans to connect with children, such as those in attendance, because of their age and the timing of the wars. "It' s very difficult for us to impart to people who have never seen war in more than 60 years. Your grandmothers, probably your great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers, were the ones that were involved in the Second World War," said Barber. see Barber on p.11 H e a r in g S c ie n c e s A u d io lo g y and H e a r in g Aid Centre "It takes energy to hear!"
