GarthW ebb students rememberveterans every day by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff B i a s , 5 |Thursday, November 17, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com At Oakville' s Garth Webb Secondary School, remembrance is a year-long activity; Named after D-Day Veteran Garth Webb, who founded the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France, the high school has made it its mission to ensure students and the surrounding community understand the sacrifices made by those who have and do serve Canada, past and present. Remembrance Day, however, is a particularly special day at the school with paintings, wreaths, art installations and more on display. Each year, the students find new ways to honour those who fight for Canada' s peace and freedom while expressing what the day means to them, says Garth Webb Principal Larry O'Malley; Gesturing to the poppy installation that lines the front foyer of the school, he told the Oakville Beaver last Friday morning (Nov; 11) how each poppy was hand-made with care. The leaves are illuminated by the natural light that shines through the school' s front windows. The poppies show details of wars past and tiny signatures representing each student and staff member in the school. A copy of the late Canadian Lt. Col. John McCrae' s world-famous war poem, In Flanders Fields, serves as a fitting backdrop to the installation. all 1,200 students form an honour guard, lining the hallways of the school. A voice over the PA. system asked the students to imagine what Webb, who died in 2012, would think if he were there to see what the staff and students have accomplished. "As we learn to play, as we teach and grow, we honour him. We honour all of those who have contributed and sacrificed so much. I know he would be very proud of us." O'Malley shared how students visit a number of stations that pay tribute to Remembrance Day The computer technology students produced a see School on p.7 Remembrance Day is a particularly special day at Garth Webb Secondary School as students `remember' through paintings, wreaths, art installations and more.
