3 7 | Thursday, December 8, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Celebrating 6 0 years in radio For more than 60 years, the Caine family has been a fixture in the Oakville broadcasting community. Through Whiteoaks Communications, they have run a number of radio stations and have been a source of music, news and entertainment over the years to residents in the local community and beyond. In celebration of the milestone 60th anniversary, the Caine family reflected on how far they've come from the day Howard and Jean Caine realized their dream of owning a radio station on Nov. 17, 1956 by powering up the transmitter for CHWO 1250. When Howard died in 1967, Jean became president and manager of CHWO and began grooming their son Michael to take over. Over the next decade, the Caines were granted a radio license for CJMR 1320 to serve nearby Mississauga. The two radio stations CHWO and CJMR were identified as `The Golden Horseshoe Radio Network.' In 2000, they were granted the AM740 frequency by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The station became AM740 Prime Time Radio with music, personalities and features aimed at older listeners. In 2008, AM740 was sold to Moses Znaimer who re-branded it as Zoomer Radio, with a focus on the 45-plus audience. The CHWO 1250 station is nowJOY 1250 (CJYE) airing Christian-based programming, while CJMR 1320 is a multi-language station serving the GTA. Meanwhile, Matt Caine, son of Whiteoaks President Michael Caine, is the third generation of the Caine family to join the broadcast world. He is the Vice-President and General Manager at Whiteoaks. "The Caines celebrate this accomplishment of being one of the few remaining independent broadcasters in Canada," a press release states. "In addition to JoyRadio and CJMR, the legacy continues with the development of an exciting digital platform Faith Strong Today." -- w ith files from D avid L ea Jean and Howard Caine as CHWO was launched Nov 17, 1956. | Caine Family photo Join a G reat Team D rop O ff a R esum e Today 217 Cross Ave - Directly Across from GO Station - FullTime Day Cook - FullTime/PartTime Night Line Cooks - Part Time Servers and Greeters 1011 Upper Middle Rd, Upper Oakville Shopping Centre - Full TimeTake Out and Counter Service - Part TimeTake Out and Counter Service W hy c h o o s e S w is s C h a let - G rea t w o rk in g h o u r s , fle x ib le s c h e d u le , g r e a t te a m m a te s The Latest In H earing Technology World's Sm allest Hearing Aid The MOXI Now SPECIAL: LAKESHORE HEARI NG " 7 a 1 ,0 0 0 0FF J w Per Pair It's a c tu a lly this sm all!
