Recently, OPL unveiled its satellite branch at Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre and announced plans to give Iroquois Ridge Branch a high-tech makeover. In similar fashion, all library branches will soon be retrofitted with new check in/out kiosks, radio-frequency (RFID) security gates and auto mated sorters. Over the next few months, library users will be able to stack desired materials onto the kiosks, swipe their cards and complete their checkout transactions independently. For residents who borrow large numbers of library items at a time, this service enhancement will be extremely useful. Returning items will work similarly; materials deposited at branch book drops, once they are upgraded, will be automatically sorted and iden tified as `returned' much more quickly. The new check in/out kiosks, security gates and automated sorters will ultimately provide more time for staff to assist customers one-onone, provide better control over the library' s in ventory and reduce operating costs. As the public library landscape evolves, intro ducing self-service and RFID has become a best Oakville Public Library practice. "Hundreds of library branches across Canada have already undergone this transition, and the results have been extremely positive," said Tara Wong, OPL director of Collections and Tech nologies. "With less inventory processing work, staff will be more accessible to the public and will be able to do more in the realm of providing literacy support, programming and more." Library users will get a sneak peak of the new check-in/out kiosks in January 2017, when the first is set to be unveiled at Central Branch. As the new technologies are installed, some branch services may be temporarily unavailable. All details will be posted on the library' s website and social media platforms regarding any fore seeable disruptions.
