Across Oakville, volunteers have stationed themselves at 10 locations for the Salvation Army Oakville's Christmas Kettle campaign, which began Nov. 19 and continues through Christmas Eve on Dec. 24. As in years past, Shannon Robinson, Salvation Army Oakville's Community and Family Services co-ordinator, said the local Salvation Army hopes the Christmas season will spark people's generosity -- in donations and volunteer time. The key to the Christmas kettle campaign's success is having a steady supply of volunteers at each of its kettle locations, which include: · Fortinos, 173 Lakeshore Rd. W; · Oakville Place (both upper and lower levels), 240 Leighland Ave.; · South Oakville Centre, 1515 Rebecca St.; · Walmart, 234 Hays Blvd.; · Real Canadian Superstore, 201 Oak Park Blvd.; · Canadian Tire, 400 Dundas St. E.; · LCBO Downtown,276 Lakeshore Rd. E.; · LCBO South Oakville Centre, 1527 Rebecca St.; · LCBO Cornwall, 321 Cornwall Rd.; · LCBO Oak Park, 251 Oak Walk Dr. "Over 200 volunteers are needed to fill 1,000 shifts," said Robinson. Donations collected from the kettle drive help fund the Salvation Army's community and family services and food bank for the year, as well as its Christmas programs. Last year, the local church assisted 394 families and close to 500 children, Robinson noted, despite experiencing a shortfall of about $8,000. "Our operations stayed pretty well the same," she said. "We were able to work with what we had, but as we look forward to supporting the needs in the community, we have seen a rise in the number of new families and individuals, so we anticipate we'll need additional funds to support the increase in assistance needed in Oakville." As such, this year's fundraising goal is the same as last year's -- $115,000. The Salvation Army of Oakville is confident it will meet the $115,000 target, especially since it was up from $16,000 from the previous year. "We're hoping to build off that momentum," said Robinson, reiterating how important volunteer support is in having a successful campaign. Last year, 60-70 per cent of the volunteer shifts were filled, more than in previous years. Most of the shifts were filled closer to Christmas, however, volunteers are needed throughout the campaign, she said. Those who are interested can contact kettle co ordinator Drew Arnold 647-534-0611. "I'd certainly encourage anybody who would like the opportunity of sharing with those in need," said long-time Oakville resident Joan Ford, who began volunteering with the kettle see Staffing on p.31 E x c lu s iv e N o n -S to p F lig h ts fro m H A M ILT O N * Caribbean Cruise Vacations Made Easy Celebrity Cruises Caribbean Vacations It's All Included Celebrity Veranda Staterooms from $2,599* It's A ll Included: · 7 Night Eastern or Western Caribbean cruise aboard Celebrity Reflection® · Roundtrip NON-STOP flight from Hamilton, ON to Miami, FL* · NEW: Free Unlimited Xcelerate Internet, approx. value of $300 · Classic Beverage Package with unlimited beer, wine, spirits and more, approx. value of $9 0 0 * · Gratuities and taxes* · All ground transfers in Florida From our previousguests: "Amazing holiday...M odern Luxuryfromstart to finish."
