Chanukah (Hanukkah) in Oakville will be par ticularly visible this year with the illumination of an eight-foot menorah. A universal symbol marking religious freedom, the large-sized menorah will be erected and illu minated during a Light Up the Night celebration at Oakville' s Iroquois Ridge Community Centre starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, to mark the eight-day Jewish holiday. The Chabad Jewish Discovery Centre, which serves, Oakville and Milton, along with Missis sauga and Brampton, will be hosting the free-ofcharge, public ceremony and community cel ebration. It will be one of about 15,000 public menorahs worldwide. Throughout the province of Ontario, Chabad will be presenting scores of Chanukah events and celebrations, including public menorah lightings, giant menorahs made out of ice and LEGO, menorah parades, latkes (potato pancakes) parties and giant dreidel houses. Following the menorah-lighting ceremony, participants will celebrate and sing, while feast ing on traditional foods of the celebration. "The menorah serves as a symbol of our dedi cation to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship God freely, openly and with pride," stated Rabbi Yitzchok Slavin, in a media release. Oakville' s Menorah is one of numerous public events sponsored by Chabad globally and pro vincially. In Ontario, Chabad will host several menorahthemed festivities, including lightings, parades, latkes parties, giant dreidel houses and Chanu kah wonderlands, among others. The Chabad Jewish Discovery Centre serves Oakville, Mississauga, Milton and Brampton, of fering Jewish education, outreach and social ser vice programming for families and individuals of all ages, backgrounds and affiliations.
