Supporters of Fair Vote Canada, Leadnow and the Council of Canadians presented a `Christmas Box,' containing a petition and letter. They asked the government to make every vote count and suggested the last election was a referendum on the need for electoral reform and Elections Canada has the mandate to pilot a Proportional Representation format at the next election, according to organizers. The group of demonstrators said it was invited into the constituency office and offered hot chocolate, where it "serenaded staff with modified Christmas carols," relating to electoral reform and proportional representation. The group said it received a response letter from Oliver stating the federal government' s commitment to electoral reform but noting major changes will not come without the broad support of Canadians. "The group was somewhat disappointed as this did not sound like a commitment to the promise that Prime Minister Trudeau made unequivocally on the campaign trail," stated in a letter emailed to the Oakville Beaver.
