The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 21, 2006 - 5 Activist fears outcome of Monday's federal election By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER International activist and selfappointed watchdog Maude Barlow is angry with Paul Martin's Liberals and worried about a governm ent led by Stephen Harper. The outspoken chair of the Council of Canadians unleashed her opinions on members of the Canadian Club of Halton Peel Thursday night. "I'm very worried about the outcome of Monday's election," said Barlow. She blamed the Liberals for agreeing with the United States and Mexico on a made-in North America equivalent to the European Union, before even consulting with Canadians on the potential deal. "I would say the same if the business sector was left out of the debate. We need a whole spectrum in on this discussion." The advocate is the author of Maude Barlow Too Close for Comfort: Canada' s Future Within Fortress North America. It delves into the so-called prosperity partnership meetings between the leaders of the three nations and their corporate counterparts that are eager to improve trade and profits at the cost of adhering to very low envi ronmental and public health and safety standards. Based on the party's record over the past 12 years, "the Liberals don't deserve a majori ty," said Barlow. Nor is absolute power to any of the federal parties favoured. Barlow is a proponent of propor tional representation, in which parties earn seats according to the number of supporting votes garnered. "It will come and break the nepotism that was seen ram pant in the Liberal sponsorship scandal." Barlow is no less comforted by a Conservative leader such as Harper, who was in favour of Canadians must demand the big issues lost its narrative of sharing for survival.
