Friday, August 25, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Herb Faire a t Royal Botanical Gardens this weekend The Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) showcases the diversity of herbs at the 10th annual Herb Faire, Aug. 26th-27th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Herb Faire is one of Canada's largest herbal festivals, with more than 60 vendors from across the country. Among the botanical products available are fresh and dried herbs, perennial plants, garden accessories and pottery, aro matherapy, oils and vinegars, jellies and soaps. Two special workshops feature container herb gardening and preparing exotic dishes with herbs. Local landscape architect David Antolin demonstrates how to plant a decorative and practical herb con tainer garden, and gourmet cook Usha Meister prepares a series of exotic dishes using herbs. Registration is $15 per workshop or $25 for both. The workshops are interactive and participants will take home the results of their work. Three workshops are offered on each day. Enrollment is limited, so registration is being taken in advance through RBG. On Saturday at 1:30 p.m., RBG's newest permanent collec tion, the Medicinal Plant Garden, will be opened officially. The sixth annual RBG Pesto Competition highlights some of the most flavourful recipes in tradition al (basil-based) and contemporary (non-basil-based) categories. Entrants can take their six-ounce samples and recipes to the Herbal and Culinary Demonstration Area. A children's activity area featur ing crafts and entertainment make Herb Faire a fun and educational weekend for every member of the family. Admission to Herb Faire is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and youth, and $2 for children aged five to 12. The price includes entrance to all RBG outdoor gardens, the Mediterranean Garden and RBG Centre. A ftee shut tle bus runs regular ly from RBG Centre and the Rock Garden.
