Friday, August 25, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 29 Award-winning cinematographer joins Sheridan TV and film team Richard Leiterman, considered the dean of Canadian cinematography, is going back to school. Next month, Leiterman will begin sharing the knowledge and expertise he has gained through a legendary 40-year career with students in Sheridan's new postgraduate Advanced Television and Film Program. "We are thrilled to have Richard join our faculty," said David Tucker, associ ate dean o f Anim ation, Arts and Design. "Our students will greatly ben efit from the wealth of hands-on expe rience and knowledge he brings to the classroom." Leiterman will also share his exper tise with students in the Journalism New Media, and post-secondary Media Arts programs. Leiterman will be teaching a course in Camera and Lighting Techniques, as well as selected modules, including HDTV for Producers, geared to work ing professionals. Despite the demands of his new position, he is not leaving his chosen career behind. "I've had a successful go at filmmaking of all kinds, and I won't stop doing it - 1just won't do as much," said Leiterman. "This new program at Sheridan really appealed to me, because I will be working with students who have already acquired consider able knowledge. I'll be helping them refine what they've learned so far." Leiterman's career began as a news stringer in London, England, following a brief course in elementary filmmak ing at the University of British Colum bia. He remained in Europe until the late 1960s shooting news and documen taries for U.S. and U.K. networks. Leiterman's work as a documentary filmmaker took him all over the world before he returned to Toronto in 1970 and launched his career in feature film. His film credits include the land mark Canadian film C oin' Down the Road , as well as A Married Couple, Silence o f the North, Wedding in White, and My American Cousin. In total, he has shot 20 feature films and 45 television movies. He has two Genies, three Emmy nominations, two C.S.C. awards and a Yorkton Gold Sheaf for cinematic excellence to his credit. Leiterman joins Dennis Berardi, David Barlow, Andy Malcolm, David Calderisi, Maryke McEwan and Keith Murphy, all of whom have signed on to teach in Sheridan's Advanced Televi sion & Film Program.
