Goodrich pleased with $1.5 m loan Company's aircraft landing gear division will use federal funds to create jobs in high-tech sector B y C a ro l B a ld w in OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The B.F. Goodrich Landing Gear Division in Oakville, will receive $1.56 million from the federal government, which will provide 22 new highly-skilled jobs in Canada - 17 of them at the South Service Road plant. The announcement was made on Wednesday morning by Oakville MP Bonnie Brown on behalf of John Manley, Minister of Industry. The money will be released in the form of a TPC (Technology Partnerships Canada) repayable loan to enable B.F. Goodrich to participate in a joint project between Canada and the United States that will involve the design and development of an alternative to hard-chrome plating in landing gear. The Hard Chrome Alternative Technologies (HCAT) project was formed to find an effective substitute to the chrome plating process, which has been associated with health and environmen tal risks. Barry Levoir, vice-president of Engineering for B.F. Goodrich, said the search for a substitute was in response to worldwide concern over the chrome plating process. Brown stressed that the new money would allow B.F. Goodrich to be part of a team aimed at "reaching a very impor tant goal.. .and I am confident that two countries, known for dri ving innovation in aerospace, will build the technology that's needed." She went on to say that Canada's "best and brightest" will set about to design and test replacement technology in the HCAT project. B.F. Goodrich will be testing the new coatings to see if they "perform adequately for the life of the aircraft," said Levoir. Three projects, involving repayable loans totaling $4.12 mil lion, are expected during the four-year development phase. (The (jyo other companies will be announced at a later date.) And it is (HVOF), which are more environmentally safe and cost efficient than chrome plating, will be tested on mostly Boeing 777s and compared with the old materials for strength and endurance "to demonstrate...that they will work in the long-term," he explained. "We will look at the coatings that we're using to see if they are viable and then do demonstration testing. And we'll do a fatigue stresses test whereby we take special cylinders, coat them with the new materials and the old materials and put a lot of fatigue stresses in there and some sheer stresses, and then com pare what happens." seeking business partners . . .
