Food strengthens family bonds-sharing an evening meal is often the only time when peo ple come together during the day. And, in the home, the kitchen is the central gathering place, where family roles are defined. While food is associated with love, comfort and celebration, eating too much of the wrong things is a cause for concern. Health care professionalsphysicians, dietitians and nutritionists-are drawing a strong link between what we eat, our risk of disease and, in turn, our quality o f life. In Canada, the obesity rate among adults has reached 50 per cent. Rates of heart disease, stroke and cancer are on the increase. Studies have shown that the frenetic pace at which most fam ilies live-where two parents are working and children are involved in myriad activitieshas led to increased consump tion of prepared foods and fast foods. As a result, more children than ever are overweight. A national campaign called `5 to 10 a Day' is increasing awareness about the need for Canadians to eat more fruits and vegetables. Only 30 per cent of Canadians eat at least five serv ings o f fruit and vegetables a day, studies show. Yet, eating fruit and vegeta bles can significantly reduce the risk of cancer. Where do people begin if they want to change their lifestyles and focus on good nutrition? A starting point is the Internet. The Dietitians of Canada , who promote health through good nutrition, have created www.dietitians.ca to help Canadians tackle the chal lenge of eating well and fighting disease. Another site, www,5tol0adav has been developed by the Canadian Cancer Society the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Produce Marketing Association.
