The Oakville Angels U-15 rep team won the prestigious National Capital tour nament championship for the fourth con secutive year. Playing in a 32-team division, the Angels outscored their opponents in Ottawa 22-2 with Kristine Snedden picking up five shut-outs. Anne Friedland was named championship MVP and tournament MVP. In the championship game, Oakville shut out hometown Ottawa Internationals 3-0. Marisa Videc banked one off an Ottawa player in the first half as the Angels took a 1-0 lead into half-time. The second half was all Oakville as they controlled the half and scored two more times by Courtney Cherrett on a breakaway set up by Lauren Glover and a close in blast by Megann Vander Vliet. Against league-rival Scarborough, the Angels got a Carly Anderson header from a comer kick midway through the first half and that stood up as the Angels won their ^ semifinal game 1-0. I The quarterfinal game against State champion runner-up Spirit of Massachusetts was, perhaps, their tough est of the tournament as the lone goal was scored in the second overtime by Laura Richards after the hustle of Stefanie Deboer resulted in a collision with the keeper and a loose ball. The Angels started off with an 11-0 win over Aylmer, Quebec. Scoring for the Angels were Stefanie Deboer (2), Marisa Videc (2), Jen Parker (2), Anne Friedland, Megann Vander Vliet, Laura Richards, Kara Anderson, and Courtney Cherrett. Game two saw a much tougher test with a nifty late goal by Courtney Cherrett need ed to edge Kitchener 3-2. Earlier goals were scored by Carly Anderson and Stefanie Deboer. Game three saw the Angels get by Richelieu, Quebec, 3-0 to win their divi sion. Goal scorers were Jenna Sporta, Carly Anderson and Marisa Videc. LEAGUE GAMES The Angels, in league play, sandwiched a couple of wins around the Ottawa tourna ment win. On Thursday, Aug. 3rd, they defeated Burlington 2-0 on goals by Megann Vander Vliet and Stefanie Deboer and on Tuesday, Aug. 8th, they defeated Dixie 2-0 on goals from Megann Vander Vliet and Kara Lang. Kristine Snedden picked up the shut-outs. X m ... but bounced out of Ont. Cup The Oakville Angels U-15 rep team hit the same flat spot again that they did last year after winning the prestigious National Capital Tournament in Ottawa. Unfortunately, this time it resulted in three straight one-goal losses and a quick exit from the Ontario Summer Games, ending their Ontario Cup provincial championship string at two. Last Thursday, the Angels fell 1-0 to Dixie. Game two on Friday saw the Angels drop a 2-1 verdict to Sudbury, unable to hang on to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kara Lang. On Saturday, Megann Vander Vliet picked up the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Whitby. London ultimately captured the provincial championship, 2-1 over Sudbury. Professional and college scouts travel to this hotbed of baseball to watch the best teenaged players competing, head to head. As the only Canadian representative in the 40-team pool, the Halton Athletic Club U-16 squad left town with very humble goals. HAC returned home with a final record of 3-1-1 having established a reputation south of the border of being a first class baseball organization. An early 8-7 loss to the Grand Rapid Reds (Ml) was Halton's only setback. In game two, HAC played the WNC Sting (NC) a 19U team and defeated them 7-3. On day two, HAC defeated the Greenville Marlins (TN) 11-1 and in a late afternoon thriller played Liberty Baseball (SC) to a 3-3 tie. The Liberty team featured 10 players who are currently playing in or committed to college baseball programs. In the last game of the weekend, HAC defeated the Carrol County Rangers (MD) 8-6. Oakville athletes who played major roles in Halton's tournament success are Chris Baluschak, Ross Corley, Ryan McNabb, Chris and Ian Miersch, John Pagliacci, Julian Richards, Gord Robertson, Daryl Ringwald, Jarred Smith and Reid Whybrow.
