The building o f a fullservice Y M CA is an enor m ous u n dertaking. A t a cost o f over $13 m illion, it is one o f O akville is largest com m unity projects. Over the past 18 m onths, the cam paign volunteers and C apital C am paign C hair Peter G ilgan, President of M attam y H om es, have been asking foundations, corporations and individu als for their support. To date, the campaign has raised over $4 million from public donations. R ecognizing the im por tance o f the project, the Town o f O akville granted a one-tim e gift o f $1.2 mil lion, then the YM CA Board has challenged the cam paign team to raise an additional $1 m illion. These dollars will be used to reduce the rem aining debt and finish the interior o f the 71-space child-care facility housed within the new Y. "Our Oakville Y is the sm allest facility in Canada, without a pool, gym nasium or w heelchair accessibility, ju st to mention a few o f its obvious deficiencies," said O akville Y C E O B ruce Ireland. "But we are one of the most responsive Ys in the country, with program s serving over 18,000 O akville residents annual ly. Just im agine what the organization will be able to provide from this new facility." The package in today's paper includes a letter by Ireland and G ilgan, a colour brochure about the new O akville Y and the cam paign, a donation card and a return envelope. "Read the m aterial, talk about it with your children, your spouse, and your friends," says Ireland. "If you have questions, give us a call. As we say at the Y, It's Your M ove."
