Treat it with care." (563? - 483? BC) Indian Philosopher and founder o f Buddhism cience and technology kept a rapid pace in the late 1980s. U.S. surgeons im planted the first plutonium-powered pacemaker; Stephen Hawking published A B rie f History o f Time, the first transatlantic fibre optic telephone cable began service; Pluto was confirmed to have an atmosphere; the U.S. B-2 Stealth Bomber was unveiled; and an Internet com puter virus, designed by a U.S. student, jammed over 6,000 military computers across the U.S. y che late 1980s, O TM H was still waiting for approval of Phase Two and Three o f the 'f 'f j t j - redevelopment project. While they waited, a vigorous self-evaluation, Project Renewal researched better ways to communicate, establish hospital and management philosophies, and set realistic yet challenging goals. For eighteen months, representatives from the Staff, Board of Governors, Medical Staff and Auxiliary were involved in a close examination and re-organization of the mission statement, communication network and philosophies. Project Renewal was an ambitious program. It involved hundreds of people and proved to be very successful in refocusing the Hospitals direction. The priorities of service have been and will remain emergency care, urgent care and elective care. (A sidenote: our Emergency Department presendy treats more than 50,000 individual cases a year - more than some large urban hospitals!). The reputations o f our Town and our Hospital have consistently attracted highly-skilled professional staff and a dedicated auxiliary - we need both; we must encourage them. Underpinning all these changes will be a continuing need for upgrading funding once our physical expansion is complete. This is a challenge the Town met for the expansion itself and can meet again as new families and companies join us, and service clubs and other organizations carry on with commitments to community service through health care support. O TM H intends to be in the forefront of planning and managing this New Generation of Community Health Care... and looks forward to the bedrock sup port o f the Hospital Association, for the inspired venture called Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital."
