Car sales were up 13.1 per cent at 6,780 units compared to the same, month last year. Truck sales saw their second-best August ever at 14,600 units, only slightly (4.5 per cent) behind last August's record pace. Overall, Canadians bought 21,380 new Ford and Lincoln vehicles last month, a 0.5per-cent increase compared to August 1999. Referring directly to the recent voluntary Firestone tire recall, Bobbie Gaunt, President and CEO, Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited, said: "We truly appreciate that so many Canadian consumers put their trust in Ford cars and trucks. Our customers' safety and satisfaction are always our top priorities. "Also, I want to thank Ford of Canada employees, dealers and suppliers for their unwavering commitment to doing what's right for our customers," Gaunt said. New sales records for August were set by Ford Explorer (up 3.0 per cent) and Windstar (up 13.4 per cent) compared to the same month last year. Taurus weighed in with its best August sales performance in 13 years while Mustang scored its best August since 1994. Combined car and truck year-to-date sales for Ford of Canada are up 3.1 per cent at 200,367, based on a 15 per cent increase in car sales and near- record truck sales which are down only 2.4 per cent compared to last year's record level. Led by the refined performance o f the Lincoln LS, Lincoln sales for the calendaryear-to-date are up 44 per cent in Canada com pared to the same periodlast year.
