4 OTHS students could be put on shifts to ease overcrowding THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday September 15, 2000 n By Kim Am ott S P E C IA L T O T H E B EA V ER Students at Oakville Trafalgar High School could find themselves attending school in shifts or facing restrictions on their course choices, depending on the rec ommendations of a committee looking to solve overcrowding problems at the school. The committee, which was appointed by the Halton District School Board to study the east Oakville school's space shortage, held its first meeting Tuesday night. Board superintendent Keith Johnson, who chaired the meeting, made it clear the committee will look at a wide range of possible solutions to alleviate the serious over crowding situation that is expected to become unman ageable over the next five years. Among the issues the com mittee will investigate: adding portables to the school site or a temporary addition to the school building; changing the school s tumbling timetable to accommodate additional classes throughout the day; running the school in two shifts; capping the school's enrollment or its programs; making boundary adjustments for OTHS attendance; relocat ing some programs to another school; setting up a second campus elsewhere in the com munity and changing the school policy on optional attendance. With about 1,400 students this year, the school is scram bling for space. Classes are being held in the gymnasium, staff dining room and library while the school board attempts to get town approval to add three new portables to the two cur rently on the site. By 2003, it is projected the school, could have almost 1,800 students and 16 porta bles. "We want to look at every option," said Ward 3 school trustee Marianne Hawthorne. "There isn't a predetermined way as to how we can solve this problem." The school currently has only about 100 more students today than it did in 1991 when it opened, explained Johnson. However, recent provincial Regular Support COMFORT SLEEP s a M im on everything i Finn Support legislation which reduced class sizes has created more classes and the need for more classrooms. Approval of the three addi tional portables requested for the school has been delayed by the town's site plan com mittee, which has listened sympathetically to concerns from local residents about traf fic and littering problems around the school. Rob Burton, president of the Joshua Creek Residents Association, attended Tuesday's meeting and told committee members that neighbors are concerned about the impact the school is having on the community. Local residents have opposed the additional porta bles because they feel their complaints are being ignored by the school and they are reluctant to see any additional capacity added which might exacerbate their problems, he ORTHOPEDIC NAPOLEON heme O said. "You should think about the possibility that you might not get your portables, and you should think about what you might do to manage your situation if you don't get your portables," Burton warned the committee. The OTHS committee, which is planning to report back to the school board with its recommendations by early November, is seeking input from members of the commu nity. People are invited to make presentations to the group on Oct. 3rd, and the committee will offer open question and answer periods at each of its meetings. The committee will be meeting on Sept. 26th and Oct. 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. Meetings will be held at OTHS and will begin at 7 p.m. All meetings are open to the public. c o h o rt C rew G uarter All w o o d .
