McKee spoke to Halton regional council Jan. 18 to provide the GTAAs annual update and highlight its business activities over the past year. "Will things get noisier or quieter?" asked Ward 4 Oakville Councillor Alan Elgar. Toronto Pearson is the second largest airport in North America, in terms of inbound international traffic, said McKee. And last year, 44 million passengers travelled through the airport and 500,000 tonnes of cargo was transported across the world. As Toronto Pearson continues to grow, McKee said airports in surrounding areas, such as Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo, could play a larger role. "We are about to launch ourselves as a coalition of airports," she added. Although McKee explained how Pearson Airport is "a big magnet for economic activity," attracting new businesses in the region, Halton regional councillors wanted to know what the GTAA is doing about the existing airplane noise. Ward 6 Oakville Councillor Tom Adams asked McKee to find out when the GTAA will have data from noise monitoring terminals available. "When can the public expect to see real results?" asked Adams, adding it would be helpful to see the facts. Ward 5 Oakville Councillor Jeff Knoll, who represents Halton on the GTAA' s Community Environment and Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC), said air traffic noise became a big problem for Oakville in 2012, when NAV Canada (a privately-run, non-profit corporation that owns and operates Canada' s civil air navigation system) made changes to the flight paths for airplanes. "We are focused on being a good neighbour," McKee assured. For related letter, see p.25 Does your financial advisor know your life goals?
