Sanders noted many Oakville retailers already offer fair-trade products, including Longo' s and W hole Foods Market. "It' s a matter of figuring out how many stores w e have that actually sell them and getting more involved in the community. We want Oakville to become a better place. We want Oakville to be seen as a place that wants to help on a global level," said Sanders. Fair trade not only incorporates equal treatment and rights of workers, it is environmentallyfriendly, too, Sanders said, noting products with the signature stamp have "sustainable thought" in their creation. "Chemicals, for example, are not used, (which) harm the environment. You cannot be certified fair trade if you're using toxic chemicals. The environment is all of our concern, globally," said Sanders. To promote the group' s mission, it has created a Facebook page and will be hosting more community events in the future, including public screenings of "really good documentaries" about fair trade, Sanders said. The concept for an Oakville fair trade designation isn't just to benefit local residents, "w e're helping vulnerable people in developing countries w ho are paid slave wages." The committee' s next meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 16 at a yet-to-be determined location. "It is a matter of saying, ` We need to be more conscious of what we buy because w e are responsible, in a way, for these people working in these conditions,'" said Sanders, w ho hopes Oakville will become a fair trade town within a year' s time. "I want people to see fair trade can be fashionable, trendy and serve a purpose. You're buying with an ethical conscious."
