Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, October 1, 2000 IT'S YOUR TURN TO WIN! Thanksgiving food drive starts Wednesday While the perception of Oakville can be one of prevailing affluence, the truth is more than 200 local families depend on Fareshare Food bank - especially its annual Thanksgiving food drive. This event, which gets underway Wednesday, Oct. 4th and runs through Oct. 11th, is Fareshare's most important drive of the year which usually produces 60% of the foodbank's annual requirements. In 1999, more than 33,000 pounds of dona tions were collected during the drive and this year's goal is 39,000 pounds. The public is being asked fill up the brown paper bag contained in today's « Oakville Beaver and drop it off at Fareshare Foodbank, located at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6. Its doors will be open between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. during the food drive. Donations can also be dropped off at all of Oakville's seven fire stations and the two local Loblaws stores. (Loblaws sponsors the bags.) Non-perishable items of any kind are welcome, although there is a particular need this year for powdered skim milk, baby food, canned meats, jam, apple juice, products like Hamburger Helper and boxed rice. Cash or cheques (for which income tax receipts will be issued) are also encour aged so that Fareshare can go to local stores and purchase what it requires. Cheques can be sent to 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6, Oakville, Ontario, L6L 2X4. For more information call 847-3988 Fareshare currently provides food to 220 families, or more than 700 people, about half of whom are children. The only scratch is boys junior football. M ost other Oakville public high schools fall somewhere in the middle of this spectrum. And even the Oakville Catholic high schools may be just enjoying a reprieve. They're on the third year of a grandfa thered contract and will be in the same position as their public board colleagues next September. White Oaks principal Karen Gill could not be reached prior to our Weekend Edition press deadlines. In a previous interview, Bev Bemdt, the phys. ed. head at White Oaks, explained that teachers didn't step forward to coach this semester. "The academic teachers who used to coach in our program all have their .5 (the controversial extra class, as mandated by the province). They're teaching another class, so they're responsible for another (fourth) class in the day, not just the time in the class room but obviously responsible for the marking and the reporting and the contact with parents and so on and so forth. And so they just don't have time. "It's what the teachers have been wor ried about through this entire Bill 74," she said. "It's really unfortunate for the kids and I can only hope it's not sort of an omen for the future." *»
