If I've run a good practice, they don't need to skate at the end of practice." It was the response Murray was hoping to hear. "That's basically what the whole philoso phy behind Mitron is. That if you run a good practice, the kids are moving and they're on the go the whole time and you don't need to stand there and skate them into the ground at the end." And Oakville actually got to demonstrate their own system, at the invitation of the O ntario Centre for Excellence, which is funded by the Toronto M aple Leafs. "We demonstrated our skill testing which we do with all the rep teams. We took the minor atom triples and the atom triples down to the ACC and they actually did their (skill) testing for the coaches that were in attendance for the festival ... "One o f the key people in the audience was Ken Dryden. He's really pushing for measurable outcomes, i.e., skill testing to become part of minor hockey ... He was really impressed with what we did." MOHA also put on a demonstration over at the ice-less M aple L eaf Gardens. "We took our peewee doubles, coached by Roy Gringmuth, down to the Gardens, which of course had no ice, and we demon strated our in-season dryland training pro gram (which all M OHA rep teams from minor peewee through to midget are involved in)." In addition to bringing in a comprehen-sive new skills system, the frequency of practice has also steadily increased. At the last coaches' meeting, Helen Ford, the league's tireless volunteer rep scheduler, had an interesting stat. "On average our rep teams had 56 prac tices over the course o f the season," said Murray. "I don't think there's another organization that can make that claim at the minor hock ey level. "And a lot of those practices were hour and twenty minute practices. We're really working to keep our practice to game ratios high. "And on top o f that the kids from minor peewee through to midget do their in-season dryland which, in effect, is an extra practice a week. "When the CAHA, last year, suggested going to two-to-one, or whatever, ratio, everyone immediately said how are we going to do that with ice (time)." But, he adds, "they never said it had to be on the ice. You know, it can be in the gym, it can be in front of a chalkboard, in a meeting room, in-season dryland or it could be shar ing ice." In particular, he said the novice and minor novice teams are sharing ice on occa sion "which gives them an extra practice a month." One of the toughest parts of his new vol unteer VP rep duties, he related, is oversee ing the rep team selection. Cutting or demoting kids, as you can imagine, is not exactly fun. But the long process, which began with the spring tryouts in April, is almost over. "We still have some work to do in terms of team compositions, ensuring that kids are playing where they should be playing, that if they're a triple-A kid then they should be playing triple-A and if they should be play ing double-A, they should be playing double-A. "To that end, this year, we've said that the rosters are not set until Nov. 15. So the rep committee and other individuals are watch ing games and they're making notes and if somebody's in over their heads or some body's dominating and should be playing triple-A, then we're going to be looking at making changes up until Nov. 15. "Because of this Nov. 15th (date), I was able to say to parents when they called with a concern, hey, because he's not playing double-A at this point, that doesn't mean he's going to stay there. We're going to have peo ple coming out and looking at games. "I was at a game last night and now I got to go look at the next level because there were a couple of kids that played last night that I think are too good for where they are, and then we'll make changes." But making the final rosters is always a tough and usually thankless process for the league's volunteer coaches and officials. The league, he said, is continually trying to make it a fairer process. For instance, he said coaches at the same level -- i.e. triple-A, double-A and single-A -- are now working more together. "And then when somebody's upset because somebody didn't make a team it's not a case o f coach X didn't want my son or didn't like my son, it's a case of three coach es got together and decided who the players should be." One of the strengths of the minor hockey system is the involvement by the players' families which can often be counted on for tireless hours of invaluable support, includ ing coaching. One drawback, when they serve in a capacity of volunteer coach, where they have decisions over player selection, is that, right or wrong, their objectivity is on the line. Certainly a coach has final say on the ros ter, confirmed Murray. But he now has a lot of opportunity for feedback. And one thing the league has done is to Catch a Rangers rep game Here's the Oakville Rangers rep hockey schedule for the following week. "So if you guys are my two assistant coaches and you have kids on the team, you would not be part of the evaluation process," said Murray. "You wouldn't have any input on who's getting cut and who's making the team. And we've put those policies in place to minimize the number of times a parent can say, hey, the kid's not getting a fair shake." Also new this year -- or more accurately rejuvenated, since it's long been on the books -- is a rep committee. "So instead of one person making the decisions or policy, we're putting stuff through the rep committee and I think that's a good way to go." O f course, it's still not perfect, agreed Murray. "It's certainly an area we want to continue to focus on next year." Thursday, Oct. 26 games (all 3:30 p.m.): Loyola at Iroquois Ridge: Notre Dame at Assumption (at General Brock): M.M.
