Friday .'ovem ber 10, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER ' 9 M any questions, some answers about m eeting's cancellation Re: Oakville Beaver Sun. Nov. 5, 2000 story: `Anonymous warning can cels Ward 5 m eeting'. Your article stated that the meeting was called off after candidates and orga nizers were sent an anonymous fax warning that a demonstration was planned for the event. A number of obvious questions call out for answers and I would appreciate seeing a published response from your reporters or from the source of your story. 1. Didn't the faxed letter indicate the fax/telephone number from which the fax was sent? Normally the sender's name appears on the edge of each page in smaller print. If it was sent from a `for-pay' establish ment, that establishment would have records and could likely identify the sender. 2. Did the police recommend that the meeting be cancelled? I suspect that they did not and that they would have been more than willing to have a presence outside the building to apprehend anyone entering the building carrying an animal carcass or a can of paint. 3. Why didn't ROAR reschedule the candidates' meeting? Why not let the police handle this highly suspect warning? I am surprised that it is this easy for anyone with a hid den agenda to denigrate a law-abiding group such as Oakvillegreen, and to halt the democratic process. grammed to delete sender information and this was done in this case. When a fa x is sent from a commercial location, that location is im printed on the docu ment, this was also not the case here, so it couldn' t be traced. 2. Yes the police recommended stop ping the m eeting as was indicated in the story in question and we 've already questioned that reasoning. 3. Availability o f candidates was the reason given fo r any rescheduling. Thanks veterans-you're a special group of men and women. LEST WE FORGET. Meeting needlessly killed I live in Ward 5 and am writing to say that I find it ridiculous that the can didates' debate for my ward was can celled due to an anonymous fax. Anybody with a goal to have the meeting cancelled or to damage the fine reputation of Oakvillegreen could be responsible. Would it not have made more sense to simply have ensured that the police were present, and allow the meeting to continue?
