Friday, November 10, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 23 Harassment should not be ignored (Continued from page 22) dignity of each individual and seeks to create an envi ronment of respect and understanding. What is really shocking is the way in which the code can be violated. It is equally shocking to see the code violated in our schools. Did you know that by treating others differently, harassing someone, failing to accommodate a person with a disability, or threatening someone, you are vio lating the Ontario Human Rights Code? What I found even more shocking is the range of discrimination that exists. They include race, ancestry, place of ori gin, record of offences, sexual orientation and family status. ,, This issue is seen as one that requires serious attention and the Halton District School Board has spent a great deal of time on this topic. It is not an issue to be dismissed or disregarded. Harassment not only poisons the lives of many students, but also affects the learning environment. A simple role to follow is that one should treat others with the same respect that one would want in return... I'm sure that there is a Biblical reference to this! School can be great when we are able to interact without the fear of violence or harassment. We should take the information and guidelines presented on the topic, make good use of them and maintain a positive and healthy learning environment.. I particularly enjoy the high degree of creative freedom we have when it comes to designing ads." In her spare time Evelyn enjoys sailing with her husband and gardening.
